Welcome to smallpetsmatter.co.uk, a project of the Starlight trust.

The aim of this site is to provide advice about the proper care of small pets such as hamsters, mice, rats, gerbils, chinchillas and degus. Rescuing these animals for the last ten years has sadly shown us that they are often misunderstood and undervalued animals who suffer considerably due to their status as a cheap child's pet. We aim to show their true worth and campaign for their better treatment.

Another important aim of this project is to provide a central list of rescue groups who can help with these pets and who are likely to have these animals looking for new homes. Whilst the plight of dogs in rescue is fairly well known now, many remain unaware of the sheer volume of small pets in rescue centres looking for new homes or the welfare issues associated with purchasing them from pet shops. So we hope that providing this list will encourage people to approach a rescue centre in order to acquire a new pet.

This is a project which we have wanted to do for some time but the time needed to run our other projects has kept getting in the way. It became apparent that if we waited until it was complete to publish the site it would continue to be delayed. So the site remains a work in progress and your feedback on any other information you would like to see here is welcomed so do feel free to contact us with any questions or comments.
